We give a heartfelt THANK YOU to the 19 local congregations and organizations and the many hundreds of Philadelphia-area peacemakers who participated in the Philly Says NO to Netanyahu Campaign.
The offices of our two U.S. senators and six congresspersons representing the Philadelphia region were flooded with emails and telephone calls in July, urging them to boycott Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to a joint session of the United States Congress on July 24, 2024.
Our efforts paid off!
We have good news and bad news to report on the statewide mobilization to stop the Stand With Israel Act (SB 1260), the dangerous state bill that seeks to force Pennsylvania taxpayers to prop up Israel’s war machine and to curtail the financial independence of our state’s colleges and universities.
First the bad news.
On Thursday (6.27.24), the Republican-controlled State Senate passed the bill by a vote of 41-7.
Now, the good news.
Five State Senators from our Philadelphia region joined two Senators from other regions in voting against SB 1260.
Fridays @ Fetterman’s supporters gathered to break bread together at Old First Reformed Church on July 1, 2024.
On April 26, 2024, several dozen peace activists gathered outside of U.S. Senator John Fetterman’s (D-PA) Philadelphia office at 200 Chestnut Street for the weekly Fridays @ Fetterman’s Peace Vigil to press for an end to U.S. funding of Israel’s illegal war against Gaza.
But, this time, the “Fridays @ Fetterman’s” vigil was on the move.
The spirited group chanted “Let Gaza Live” and “Ceasefire Now” as they conducted a peace walk up Second Street to the Market Street El, where they boarded the “Philly Peace Train” with their anti-war banners, buttons, and signs.
Exiting the El at City Hall, the peace demonstrators then headed west to President Biden’s Philadelphia Campaign Headquarters at 1801 Market Street, where they staged another rally and vigil.
On April 11, 2024, while 14 war resisters were being arrested at the Philadelphia office of U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) (SEE the WHYY news post here), two Presbyterian ministers, a Mennonite, and a Quaker from the Philadelphia area staged a simultaneous sit-in at the senator’s Washington, D.C. office in the Russell Senate Building.
All told, 18 war resisters from the Fridays @ Fetterman’s Weekly Peace Vigil were arrested in a coordinated Action in Philly and D.C. demanding that Senator Fetterman support an immediate, lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
